No role is isolated. To succeed in any senior role, you must help your peers. That means reaching across the organisational divide and helping others who are expert in their domains, in ways that enable them to perform better. It’s an essential part of a successful executive mindset. How does that work?
- Start by seeking to understand their area from the inside – it has parallels to your own. What are the facts, key concepts and processes that lead them to insights invisible to you?
- Map out the overlap between your areas of responsibility. That’s where you put your best people, those most open to growing. Give them real jobs in other areas, so they come back better able to help.
- Share your network and professional community. Make introductions for your peers that could help them in their roles and their careers.
- Give up some of your budget for a colleague’s critical project.
Why do this?
1 Team cohesion built this way makes your personal talent a systemic asset.
2 It’s enhances your reputation and keeps you flying with your Eagles.
3 It’s more (professional) fun.
